“Skattefrie casino” is what Norwegians search for when they want to know whether casino winnings are taxed. But the answer is not simply that a casino is tax-free or taxable. It depends on the size of each individual win and where you played.

The rule from Skatteetaten is that a gambling win from a game that is not tax-exempt becomes taxable only when that single win is more than NOK 10,000. That last part matters: the limit applies per win and per game, not to several wins added together.

So, if you have several wins that together exceed NOK 10,000, that does not make them taxable. Wins of NOK 10,000 or less are tax-free, including wins at foreign online casinos. Exactly NOK 10,000 is still within the tax-free limit.

Once a single win goes above NOK 10,000, though, the calculation changes. The whole win is taxable, not just the amount above the limit. You can deduct the stake in that same game, and the tax rate is 22 percent in 2026, or 18.5 percent in Finnmark and Nord-Troms.

There are also winnings that are always tax-free: those from Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto.

The receipt calculator below shows what you keep. The distinction to keep in mind is between several separate wins and one win above the threshold. Adding winnings together is not how the NOK 10,000 rule works.

The difference between a tax-free win and a taxable one becomes clearer when you put actual amounts next to each other. Take a win of NOK 8,000 at a foreign online casino. That is tax-free, and you do not have to report it.

Now take NOK 25,000 won on one spin, with a NOK 100 stake. The taxable amount is NOK 24,900, giving tax of about NOK 5,478. You keep NOK 19,522. So the headline win and the amount left after tax are two different numbers.

With a bigger win, the tax figure gets bigger too. NOK 1,000,000 won in one game at a foreign online casino, with a NOK 50 stake, gives tax of about NOK 219,989.
